3 Fun Ways to Teach Your Children About Animals

Busy parents, Here is a Great Learning Solution.

We all want to help support our children in their education, but life can get busy and hectic.  Thankfully, there is a learning website that’s FREE and your family can peek in on animals in the wild from the safety of your home computer or phone.  It’s also a great solution for those times when you need your children to be quiet while waiting, like in a dentist’s office.

Explore.org Website.  On the EXPLORE.ORG website, your family can easily choose from the menu of many animals being videoed.  Some are taped videos, and others are live feeds.  The site is user-friendly, even for your children. EXPLORE.ORG:  https://explore.org/livecams

EXPLORE.ORG is a great learning resource for both homeschool and public-school families. Your family can enjoy watching animals in their natural habitats or even at the zoo.  For several seasons, my family would check EXPLORE.ORG and watch the Alaskan bears as they would catch wild salmon in the rivers.  It was so interesting!  We also watched a mother eagle bring food to her baby birds in their nest.  It was definitely an educational experience.  When my children were young, we picked a time of the day to look forward to checking on their favorite animals.  They really looked forward to it, and we had a lot of fun talking about our observations and then discussing facts about the animals we were observing.

3 Fun Ways to Teach Your Children About Animals

  1. BOOKS. On Explore.org, choose several animals to observe. Expand the learning by going to the library and checking out some age-appropriate books about the chosen animals or ordering books online.
  2. INFORMATION CARDS. Get a packet of 3×5 index cards and help your child create information cards.  Pick 2-3 animals a week to explore on Explore.org.  For each animal, have your children write out the name of the animal at the top of the card.  Then, choose a number of facts you want them to learn.  For example, if you choose for your children to learn three facts: 1. Where the animal lives, 2. What the animal eats, 3. What makes this animal unique? Your children can look for these facts in the library books you’ve checked out, or you can help them learn to do research online.  Activities like this help excite children to learn more.
  3. VIDEO REPORT. Have your children use the information cards they worked on to create a video report. Have your child practice and decide if they want to draw any pictures or props to set out to add interest. Then, have your child practice making an interesting short animal report video. Share the video with close friends or family members, like grandparents. If you have several children, let them choose different animals to expand everyone’s learning, or they can team up together on the same animals. They could even put their new animal knowledge to a tune.

The idea is to get your children excited about learning.  This is a FREE and EASY way to do just that.  I hope you will look up the website with your family and have as much fun as my family has over the years.

Blessings,

Jeanne
